About

Emergency Vehicles in GTA

Emergency vehicles have been part of GTA since 1997. In the original game, the Squad Car was actually the fastest vehicle available, with the highest top speed and acceleration. Three city-specific variants existed: Liberty City featured a rounded Chevrolet Caprice-style cruiser, while San Andreas used a black-and-white angular design and Vice City had a blue-and-white rounded variant.

GTA III (2001) introduced the modern police vehicle formula. The Police Car drew inspiration from both the Chevrolet Caprice and Ford Crown Victoria. Originally, these cars featured blue-and-white NYPD-style liveries in pre-release screenshots, but were changed to black-and-white following the September 11 attacks. The same change happened to the Enforcer SWAT van, based on the NYPD Freightliner E33 Emergency Service Unit truck.

The Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor became the face of GTA police fleets, mirroring real life where it commanded 85% of the American police car market by 2003. GTA 6 updates the fleet with the Bravado Police Buffalo STX (2015 Dodge Charger) and Police Gauntlet Interceptor (Dodge Challenger SRT Demon). Trailer footage reveals "ghost" decals on some police cars, designed to be nearly invisible until light reflects off the material.

Emergency Vehicle Types

Vice City law enforcement deploys different units based on wanted level and situation.

Patrol Cars

Standard police cruisers for routine patrol and initial pursuit response. Based on the Dodge Charger and Ford Crown Victoria. These handle most law enforcement duties and spawn at 1-2 star wanted levels across Vice City streets.

Pursuit Interceptors

High-performance vehicles for chasing fast suspects. The Police Gauntlet Interceptor, based on the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, reaches 285 km/h. These deploy when regular cruisers cannot keep up with sports cars and supercars.

Tactical Units

Armored vehicles for high-risk situations. The Brute Police Riot (Lenco BEAR) deploys at 4+ star wanted levels with six-seat capacity for SWAT teams. Officers carry heavy weapons and use these for barricades and tactical breaches.

Air Support

The Police Maverick helicopter (Eurocopter AS350B) provides aerial surveillance and pursuit support. Appears at 3-star wanted level and tracks player movement from above. Sharpshooters can fire from the cabin during extended pursuits.

The Wanted Level System

How law enforcement escalates their response based on your criminal activity.

1-2 ★

Police Response

Officers on foot and nearby patrol cars respond. Standard cruisers pursue at moderate speeds. Roadblocks set up on main roads. Easy to escape by leaving the area or hiding.

3 ★

Helicopter Support

Police Maverick deployed for aerial tracking. Escape becomes harder as the chopper follows your movements. More aggressive pursuit tactics. Spike strips deployed on highways.

4 ★

SWAT Response

Enforcer vans and tactical teams with heavy weapons. Officers wear body armor and carry assault rifles. Roadblocks become more frequent. Police boats patrol waterways.

5 ★

FBI Intervention

Federal agents in fast vehicles join the hunt. FBI Rancher SUVs and Buffaloes pursue aggressively. Agents carry the most lethal weapons. Survival becomes extremely difficult.

6 ★

Military Deployment

Army called in with Rhino tanks and Barracks trucks. Soldiers carry M16s and M4s. Tanks destroy any vehicle on contact. The classic maximum response from GTA III through San Andreas.

GTA 6

New Systems

Vehicle Description tracking, witness mechanics from RDR2, dynamic response times based on location and crime severity. Ghost decals on undercover cars. Rumored six-star return.

Emergency Vehicle Missions

Classic side missions available when entering emergency vehicles in GTA III through San Andreas.

MissionVehicleObjectiveReward (Level 12)
VigilantePolice Car, Rhino, HunterChase down and eliminate criminals+50% Maximum Armor
ParamedicAmbulanceTransport injured patients to hospital+50% Maximum Health

Important Notes

  • • There is no cheat code to spawn police vehicles in GTA 5 or GTA Online
  • • GTA 5 reduced the wanted level system to 5 stars, removing military response
  • • Vehicle missions (Vigilante, Paramedic, Firefighter) were removed in GTA 5
  • • Use LAWYERUP cheat in GTA 5 to lower wanted level, not to spawn police cars
  • • GTA 6 wanted level and vehicle mission details will be confirmed after launch

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you steal police cars in GTA 6?

Yes, stealing police vehicles has been a core GTA mechanic since 1997. In GTA 6, you can commandeer any emergency vehicle, though doing so typically adds to your wanted level. Police vehicles often have better performance than civilian cars, making them useful for escapes once you clear your stars.

Is there a cheat code for police cars in GTA?

GTA 5 does not have a cheat code to spawn police vehicles. You can lower your wanted level with the LAWYERUP cheat or raise it to attract police attention, but spawning a police car requires stealing one from officers or finding parked cruisers at police stations.

What triggers different wanted levels?

Minor crimes like traffic violations or fist fights trigger 1-2 stars. Shooting in public, stealing vehicles while witnessed, or assaulting officers escalates to 3-4 stars. Mass violence, attacking military bases, or killing multiple police officers pushes you to maximum wanted level.

Will vigilante missions return in GTA 6?

GTA 5 removed the classic vehicle side missions (Vigilante, Paramedic, Firefighter). Whether GTA 6 will bring them back is unconfirmed. These missions were popular in earlier games for their useful rewards like increased health, armor, and fire immunity.

What real cars are GTA 6 police vehicles based on?

The Police Buffalo STX is based on the 2015 Dodge Charger, America's current dominant police vehicle. The Vapid Police Interceptor draws from the Ford Taurus. The Police Stanier LE is inspired by the legendary Ford Crown Victoria, while the Police Gauntlet resembles the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.
